New Year

Hello. That picture up there... I was there. I was in New York City. I was in the most awesome place I have ever been. I was really happy. I was in love. Again. I was with my love in a place that I actually fell in love with. It is a magnificent city. An amazing city. A city that is, and I know this will sound like utter shite, but it was alive. It was so alive. I don't think I have experienced anything quite like it. Amazing. And the most awesome thing about, aside from the food and the everything else, is that, despite the size of the place, you actually feel apart of it. As a tourist, I felt at home, I felt safe, I felt apart of it. It's amazing. Amazing. Awesome. The best thing I have done thus far in my life. I have to go back. WE HAVE  TO GO BACK!

Anyway... There was some inspiration that came away with me when I got the plane and headed back to this fucking country. Yeah I know its OK over here. It's OK. Over there is AWESOME. Here... OK. You see? I like McDonalds over here. I LOVE it over there. See? Inspiration. Yes! The whole going after what you want, seeing how huge everything is and how you can be apart of something if you move and go after it... seeing it... seeing how people were happy, simply because they were apart of something special. I want that. I'm gonna fucking get it. So I have begun...

So in an attempt at some sort of New Years resolution bull hang I have tried to hit the ground running with the writing and trying to move my head into a better place. A more successful and fulfilling space.

Better writing focus. A buddy of mine and I will be swapping scripts at certain key points in the year as we both strive to get together a portfolio of awesomeness.

Key scripts for me this year:
  • POWERLESS
  • I AM BEAR
  • Girl at the Centre of Creation
  • Short film - potential feature idea
Helping me with this focus on writing is this very blog. Will attempt to get something on here once a week. And some online magazine writing. Have just landed a writing gig for The Metropolist which is very exciting. Unpaid, but very cool as it is allowing me to flex that muscle I use for writing, keeping me deadlines and keeping me on point and editing my own work nicely. Love it. Go read! I am writing stuff for the TV section, loving it.

That is all.

Mindfulness

I suffer from anxiety.

It sucks.

It is completely misunderstood. Many think it is the same as being scared to go up on stage and talk in front of people or taking a test or any of those things that we get scared about from time to time.

It's not. I mean, that shit can affect me completely, but it is not that. Not really. It is much more extreme and abstract and fucking annoying.

I hate it. I hate having to deal with it and not dealing with it and letting it get worse and making it go away and thinking all is right with the world and then suddenly getting bitten on the arse by it, but this time it is bigger and badder.

Hate it.

Badder is a word. It should be. Is it badda? Bader? Who the fuck cares.

Anyway, yeah, hate it. Messes up a day. Heart races, chest tighten, pain in stomach, head spins, get very warm all of a sudden, can't speak properly, legs go funny... its stupid, but it is not. It is horrible.

Last year I discovered mindfulness. A series of techniques that allows you to train your brain to have a better relationship with these feelings that take over your body. Not getting rod of them, but allowing you to understand through meditation, breath exercises and awareness that these feelings are just that, feelings. They cannot hurt you and they should not be used as a way to prepare yourself for the future, unless of course you are psychic, in which case you don't need to be reading this at all.

So I practiced it and I got better. I got better. Stupid to even think that. There is no cure. I stopped practicing it and got myself into a mess again. Change of routine threw me out of whack, completely and utterly. I did not get better. It did not go away. This is who I am.

I am practicing again. Mediating three times a day. It helps. It helps with creativity as well. I had a project I was developing and it wasn't going the way I wanted, it had been though many iterations and just stunk. It was wrong and it was a mess. This past week I have cracked it, freeing up a part of my brain that was being swallowed by self doubt, worry and anxiety I have managed to come out the other side of an annoying 'block'.

Mindfulness is cool.

I AM BEAR

So at the age of thirty I decided to make a change. I wasn't happy. I mean is anyone? Really happy? I mean, just sit back and ask yourself, really take a good long look at everything you have in front of you, what you did today, yesterday, last week, what you ate, what you watch on TV... ask yourself, are you happy? Don't lie! You know that you aren't. None of us. Not really. We pretend, we delude, we deceive, inveigle and obfuscate on a daily basis it becomes second nature to us, like taking a piss.

So... yeah, not happy. Life seems to have passed me by. I know, I know I am only thirty, but I just expected so much more right now. To be honest I kinda thought, job and girlfriend, friends and band were the be all and end all of all creation. But they aren't. I am not ungrateful. I am not some mental case. I am happy to have a job, a roof over my head a girl who seems to love me for who I am. I guess I just don't understand why. Why does she love me? Why am I doing this fucking job I am doing? Why? I don't know.

The band. Would have thought that might have made a difference. And it does. When I am smashing the shit out of that drum kit and we are creating something awesome I can get lost in it all and forget all the things that trouble me. But it is fleeting. It feels fleeting. It doesn't feel tangible. I guess I know that when we are done, those good feelings will be gone.

You are probably thinking, why the hell should I even carry on reading this. This guy is a misery. I am not. I promise. I am just a little fed up with what I have and who I am. To be honest, again, I don't really know who I am anymore. I feel like I have lost touch with myself, the only time I feel alive is when I am drumming, is when I am in the...

OK. Something else I need to mention. It is a little weird. Believe me it is not lost on me, but... well I can't explain it. I just feel like me again when I am in it and I am drumming in it. I experimented the other day an kept it on after drumming and well... I walked home in it and felt awesome. I have a bear suit. Like a proper looking one, like from Gentle Ben, not a teddy bear type thing, but a real grizzly bear type thing. We did this gig once where they wanted animals performing... it was money, we are a bit shit and will take whatever looks like a gig as an opportunity to play our music... anyway, I kept the suit. It's not some sexy thing, I don't get my rocks off when I am in it... I just feel... like me again.

LOST...

So yeah, I seem to be lost again.

Stuck in the middle of where I am and where I want to be. Impatient for something that may not happen. Waiting for the moment where all I am doing will pay off, all the while I am trying not to get lost.

Well... I am. I seemed to have failed that... you know, the trying not to get lost again thing.

My thumb on my left had keeps twitching involuntarily. Weird.

Lost? Where? What happened? Well, nothing. Not really. Still working, still writing, still living with the love of my life and some animals that look after us. There is no great adventure. There is only my head... which is where I am lost. Again.

Thing is, I think it would generally be easier if I was lost in a wood or some vast desert or snow barren continent after waking up with no memory of who I am or how I got there. At least there would be a purpose. Some kind of plot that would propel me forward. Who am I? How did I get here? The need to survive. There would be drama, action, adventure. There would be something to get your teeth into, some substance, substance that I hope can be found in the stories I tell... But this 'adventure' or non adventure I find myself lost in... there is no substance, there is no tangible drama or meaty plot to get your teeth into. It's all so fucking abstract and not in an awesome David Lynch way with dancing dwarfs and damn fine coffee. The coffee is shit! It's just fragments of anxiety that rush through my like wind, a breeze, sometimes gusting, nearly knocking me off my feet.

Procrastination. That's what I fucking have. Thoughts. Bubbles upon bubbles of thoughts swell up inside my head and burst through my mouth as soon as I open it up. And these bubbles are coloured with worry, doubt... and not about anything important. All the important thoughts are stored safely away in boxes at the back of my head, behind all the bull crap that produces all these worry bubbles. Despite the amount that escapes my head there is always more, always fucking more.

I have found ways to get out of my head and find my footing on the planet. There are some good ways. The best being allowing my fingers to find letters and create words that produce interesting copy, stories, dialogue... This is what is important, this is what I need to be doing, this is what you all need to be doing.

What. You. Want. To.

If I was lost in the Arctic I would probably freeze to death in my current situation. Instead of the audience asking these questions of what is he doing there, how did he lose his memory, it would be me. Paralysed by the worry these questions produce when trying to work out the answers instead of just moving forward, looking for others, looking for a secret arctic base, finding a way to some kind of warmth. If I just stop worrying, over analysing and over thinking and make my feet move forward, one in front of the other... I would find my way, I would survive, I would make progress and get somewhere, get to where I want to.

Where. I. Want. To... be. Right here. Writing here for whoever finds it and wants to join me on a journey. Cheese. Totally. Canadian Mature is my favourite.

Through the Woods

August.

I seem to be obsessed with writing about the woods again.

Red Planet shortlist was as far as I got. No final for me. Never mind. I am incredibly grateful and lucky to have made it as far as I did. No mean feet. But as with the BBC rejection it has allowed me to refocus, re- plan and work out what was wrong with the rejected script and how I can improve. And very much like with the BBC it has allowed me to look at Powerless, as I did with The World is My Oyster and figure out a better way of telling that story. Which I will in due time. I still feel the script is in a good shape and will remain as part of my portfolio going forward until I decide to rewrite. I want to and need to focus on something new and the current obsession(s).

Don't put all your eggs in one basket. Have many eggs in many baskets. Or have many baskets for many different eggs. Or... shut up. You get what I am attempting to put into words? No? Fuck it.

Have many projects on the go. It is massively important to not rest all hope on one thing. I had two things out there and I kinda left it at that, hoping that one or both would do the thing I wished for. Have many projects on the go and have many of those many projects living out there in some form of hope.

The World is My Oyster... still obsessing over this. several scenes exist, one I am very excited about rewriting and have exist within a script. Would love to see this scene moving, will be very cool. Still debating whether to illustrate it as a comic as well as sending it out into the big wide world. We shall see. But the plan going forward for August is to get a series bible sorted. I have been reading a lot about getting a series bible in place before you starting writing your pilot script. I have always taken my thoughts and notes as a series bible, so this will be the first time I actually record all that stuff and get it into a cohesive pack, if you will, containing treatment, series breakdown (2 page breakdown for each subsequent episode), and character profiles. This will then be sent out to various lucky people who have an opinion I value to read and get back to me with thoughts. there will be harassment for thoughts... Then a script will be written. A script will likely be written in bits (as is currently what is occurring with this) over the next few months in my note book.

Through the Woods... so obsessed with the woods again. Been scribbling bits and pieces over the last month about woods, forests, trees... bits of mood and atmosphere as it blows through my thoughts like the wind in Twin Peaks. Then I came across an awesome book by Emily Carroll called Through the Woods which shared beautifully what I was obsessing about. The mystery of a deep, dark wood. What is out there in the dark, underneath... Wonderful and frankly terrifying graphic novel. I whole heartedly recommend. Anyway, this woods obsession made me rifle through some old notebooks and I came across a very rough treatment that I never did anything with about loss, love, obsession, death, hopes and dreams and the woods. I think this will be a project for 2015. I think I might begin my first screenplay...

Gangs.

Fuck me it's hot.

I'm sitting here in a Bravest Warriors tee and me boxers, sweating like a motherfucker. But hey, it's July. I see dark clouds forming outside the window and the promise of another thunderstorm clearing the air and making things a little more bearable are being touted. I remain, however, sceptical. Or cynical. I don't think I can ever describe myself as sceptical. Cynical is a much better word. Glass half empty? Glass was fucking knocked to the ground and smashed by some ignorant toss bag who didn't care that the glass contained my drink and I was enjoying it.

So yeah... hot. July.

Latitude on Friday. Awesome. Never been. Hopefully will go again one day. Felt like a grown up festival. Not like Reading. Kiddie festival. Anna Calvi, Mogwai, Broken Twin... was stupendous.

Email from the BBC on Friday. Shit. Bummed me out. Doesn't take much these days. The World is My Oyster was sent to them a couple months ago(? fuck if I can remember) and they didn't like. I'm guessing they didn't like. Was a risk. I submitted to the comedy open submissions... to be honest I am not sure you can class it as a comedy. It's a weird drama. Amusing I hope. But I felt weird describing it as a comedy. Ah well... It has made me now more cynical about my chances with Red Planet. There was some comfort knowing I had two possibilities sitting out there being judged. Now I have one. The one I have the most faith in, the one I LOVE, the one I want to win. But... I just don't know. Those clouds are getting darker out there. Perhaps this fucking heat will subside. My fingers are crossed. For the script. I hope, I really do hope that I get to the next round. I can almost stand not winning. but the final round. To be a finalist. That would be awesome. That would really help some choices that I am in the process of making. It would back them up.

The World is My Oyster was rejected. I kinda expected it. I am bummed but something happened last night. I was reading Deadly Class #6 (pictured) and my brain started doing it's mad dance when ideas begin percolating. This morning I woke when my lady left for work and read it again. I then tried to sleep some more and I did. I had a dream about telling my father how miserable I was and that he didn't understand and he didn't. He kept yelling at me, telling me to sort it out, pull myself together. you don't understand, I said, to which he replied, how can I when you won't tell me. I screamed at him and choked with tears and emotion and cried and bawled and told him I wanted to jump off a fucking building. I woke in floods of tears and howled and cried and fell asleep again... I then dreamt about the cover to Deadly Class #6. I dreamt about The World is My Oyster about those characters looking like the characters on the front of the book, that they were black and white in a colour world. That they made themselves black and white in colour world. They were in the back of a van and had guns and were talking about girls, one girl in particular, cereal and what it would be like to be disabled. I woke up, thought about writing it all down and a bunch of other shit that came to me. I laid there instead and ran through a first episode of The World is My Oyster and got excited and thought I should write this down. I then read Ms Marvel and got up and ate some Frosties and watched last nights Big Brother (don't judge me you Eastenders watching fucks). I am now going to attempt to write the first episode of The World is My Oyster different to what the BBC didn't like and try and remember the awesomeness of my dream and subsequent thoughts.

You can purchase Deadly Class from an ace comic shop on the shoulder of Chelmsford called Dark Side Comics. Tell em I sent you, cos that would be cool. It's out in trade but you should do yourself a favour and get it monthly. Tis aces.

Round 3...

So I'm sitting on the sofa watching It's Always Sunny... (which I am currently obsessed by) and I am awaiting a pizza. I'm so flipping hungry.

What seems like an age ago I entered Powerless into the Red Planet Prize - an awesome competition that gives UK screenwriters a chance to show off what they are capable of. I have entered most years I think, I didn't last year for some reason... I don't think I had anything ready for it. But Powerless was ready this year. So I sent it. This is really not turning into the brilliant little post I was hoping it would, but I am so flipping hungry... basically May 30th, another crappy day at stressful soul destroying work had come to a halt and I am waiting for my other half to do whatever it is that she was doing at the time and I check my emails. I don't actually remember much of what happened next. I can't honestly say I have felt as awesome as I did that that moment. That moment I that email...

ROUND THREE!

Pizza is here.

I can only disappoint you...

A while ago I got excited about a possible avenue to take my writing down. I love comics. I fucking love them. Currently I have an expensive habit, and one that I am not likely to kick anytime soon. I like the habit. They make me happy. That wondrous parcel that arrives through my door each month filled with promises of brilliance and never failing to fulfil that promise. Love them.

I would love to have a published comic book out there in the big wild world. One of my favourite writer's (Brian Michael Bendis) said that comics were one of the best mediums to write for as there was no budget or restrictions to your imagination. If you can think it and write it then it will be there on the page. Comics are a much more immediate medium to create stories for. They are awesome art forms that tell stories unlike any other. Film and TV are ace, don't get me wrong, but they are filtered, compromised in some way, writing and drawing your own comic... fuck compromising anything, this is your vision on paper in ink. Yeah!

I used to be able to draw. I used to kick arse with drawing. I don't really know what happened. I think I kinda exchanged skills, drawing for writing. Time has moved on a lot since that exchange at the skills store took place and, well, here we are. I can't really draw for shit. Or more to the point, I don't have the patience of discipline for it anymore. Writing is more immediate and satisfying. I can think of a scene and character and an action and write it and have it front of me in rough form in moments. Drawing... fuck... I can't fucking draw arms and legs properly... that would take the only creative excitement out of the process and get stuck on what I can't do. it's like not being able to spell and knowing you can't proceed unless you get that first word of that fucking sentence written.

So I found someone a dude who could help. I wrote a few crazy concepts that didn't go anywhere. I unearthed an old idea that has never quite gone away involving microwaves, BMX chicks, the power of music and the power of film making and the power of friendship. It was The Young Ones meets Mighty Boosh (I don't fucking know how you spell it) meets Jules et Jim. All systems were go for a glorious few weeks. I was proper stocked. And then it didn't happen, isn't happening.

Yeah.

I have a script. I like it. Cannot let it stagnate. So I have gone back in. With an eye to developing it into a TV pilot sitcom script. Who knows what will happen to it. But I like writing it. Seems to be getting a lot stuff out of my system that has plagued other scripts. Personal stuff from the past that clogged up a possible good script now has a proper home, because it is about personal past stuff. But fun. Not doom and gloom, wacky and fucked up and mental and hopefully endearing and funny.

Yeah.

I can only disappoint you, so keep you fingers crossed if you wish on this one. One of many that have entered into this arena of hopes and dreams. Keep em crossed. I can only disappoint you like everyone else on this fair planet we call Earth. But fuck it, we're still alive aren't we. Isn't that what it's all about?

Who knows?

Namaste.

Faith

Happy New Year.

Blimey. Another one.

This year it will be different.

I'm sure that is something said/written at the start of each and every year that smashes it's way through the brief and joyous day off that many of us working the retail sector say or write.

But this year... and I believe it to be a first for myself... this year, I am generally planning on things being different. It's a kind of shit or get off the pot kind of situation. And if I am being brutally honest, something that I am currently not making it to the pot for... shitting myself. Or terrified to be slightly more dignified with the description of my current feelings.

Best to keep the details close to the chest, as I tend to be a bit superstitious about many things and one of those things is revealing all your cards too early is likely to damage your chances of winning. Already I feel I have said too much.

Just keep the faith.

Anyway, starting as I mean to go on...

NO LIFE!
(subtitle - the year that was 2013)

FILM
Interesting year for film and I sadly didn't get to see nearly all the films I wanted to see. The most interesting came at the start and at the end, with one very long surprise that I am looking forward to revisiting. So, my favourite of the year that was 2013 (which generally was a shitty year, not aiming that at film, just in general)... also this in no real order...

10. Gravity - A film that many will bang on about the glorious use of 3D. And yes, it is astonishing and brilliant used and incredible to think that they were pretty much stuck in a green room for the duration of film, in fact it is baffling that it looks so flipping awesome. Just think of the green room spectacular of the Star Wars prequels and then compare to the wonderment of Gravity. It's worth noting that I was being sarcastic regarding the use of the word spectacular in my Star Wars comment. It is also worth noting that I revisited all the prequels last year and really enjoyed them. Anyway, Gravity, 3D... yes! Awesome. But what is even more awesome is the relationship between director and actress. For me, Bullock and script and direction are Gravity. It is a stunning film about birth, death and rebirth and loss and being lost and being found and finding ones self. it is also one of the most immersive film experiences I have had in a long time. Yes, the 3D helps, but so does Sandra. So many times I wanted to climb inside and help.

9. Place Beyond The Pines - I will freely admit to having a small man crush on Gosling. But is very good at what he does. Looking pretty and acting well. Gangster Squad sucks in many ways and he is pretty naff in it as well, but this and Only God Forgives are two very awesome performances. Aside from Gosling, this film ticks many boxes for me. I love the structure to it, I love the themes to it and the direction and the writing on show here. I love the music and in particular I LOVE the choice of final song. Perfect.

8. Iron Man 3 - Hugely entertaining film. Every part works. Yes it's ridiculous, but it's great fun because of that. Normally if a comic book film messes with certain laws and story and character traits I am thrown from the film (Dark Knight Rises I am looking at you), but this film makes me glad of it, makes me love it even more.

7. Upstream Colour - Blimey. Primer is brilliant and clever and too clever and brilliant and Upstream from the same director makes me feel the same. Love it. Can't quite describe it to anyone I try and talk to about it, but it does to me what a Lynch film does and that is fill me completely, head to toe with feelings that completely steal me from the real world that sucky crap of real life.

6. The Worlds End - Just awesome. Probably my favourite of the 3 Cornetto Flavour films. Has the same addictive quality to it that Scott Pilgrim does (which I watched about 20 times when it arrived on bluray).

5. Stoker - My first favourite film of 2013 is just perfect and I don't care what anyone else says. Mood, music, acting, direction, I can't find fault in it. I didn't really want it to end. There a fault. But then all good things...

4. Pacific Rim - On first viewing I was left a little cold, but seeing it again, on a smaller screen, I weirdly enjoyed it so much more. It is what it is and does what it does wonderfully well. I want more. I wish Del Toro was making some Transformers. I am going to imagine that for a while.

3. Man of Steel - Love it. Mainly because I wish I could fly. I generally wish I was Superman, so there is a lot of wish fulfilment playing out in front of me. I became obsessed with Zimmer's score, completely blew my socks off. Just epic and awesome. I couldn't give a fuck about the disaster porn, so fucking what. Two Superbeings going at it, there is going to be damage. No one bitched about the destruction in Pacific Rim or Star Trek into Wrath of Kahn.

2. Evil Dead - I had my doubts and the second viewing wasn't as rewarding, but fuck me what a film, what a gory, painful fun film.

1. Django Unchained - I love Tarantino cannot wait to see what he does next. He will always make a film that is a favourite of mine. Always.

There are most likely more that I fell in love with, but it is getting dark, the washing up needs doing, there are some hungry pussy cats getting mad at me for not putting down some biscuits for them and I kind of need the loo. I must say that the Hobbit Part 2 was a huge surprise, loved it. Now, I would not have bothered with these films if it hadn't been for a certain actress who joined part 2 playing a character that doesn't appear in the books at all. But I did. Part 1 was ok. Part 2 was brilliant. I am very glad I got back into these films. Generally brilliant from start to finish, Smaug really made me excited to revisit the Rings trilogy.

Those Who Tell The Truth Shall Live Forever

So there was this email that came through a little while ago saying that they have my script and they are going to be reading it and I should expect to hear something next month.

They... They being the BBC. Crazy. Cool. Fingers are crossed. I'm not expecting the world. I not expecting anything that is going to change anything. But some words back would be great. Good, bad or ugly, something. If it's good, then fuck yeah, if it's bad then at least I will know what to do next.

Russia is zipping along nicely. Have just rewritten the outline for the first part of this five parter comic.

Sun is out.

I am meditating. Not right now obviously, but I am and it is great. Really good and really useful and really helpful.

NO LIFE!

Music... Pineapple Thief, Explosions in the Sky, Haim, The 1975, Hans Zimmer's Man of Steel music makes me fucking wanna fly.

TV... Game of Thrones, Banshee, Mad Men, HANNIBAL!!! Hannibal is fucking awesome, inspiring brilliance.

Film... Iron Man 3, The Place Beyond The Pines, Double Indemnity on Blu...

Comics... The Massive, Rachel Rising, All New X Men, Storm Dogs, Punk Rock Jesus, East of West... I love comics.

RUSSIA ON ICE

Powerless is out there now. I have to say I am more excited by the prospect than scared. Rejection has never really been something that has concerned me when sending stuff out like this. The reason for that is, it the most likely of outcomes. Now, many will probably say that is extremely negative and dumb way to look at things, trust me, I have been hearing that a lot. I have always justified those thoughts by saying that I am prepared for the worst, so if the bad happens I am not surprised and ready for it, anything good that happens is a nice surprise. But in doing this and thinking in such a way, you begin to lose sight of what is important. Now.

Think about all those films or books where a character gets a vision of something that may happen in the far future and spends the rest of the narrative trying to warn, prevent and stop crazy bad event from happening... yeah, that's me. And what happens is that life passes you by.

What I am getting at in a rather crappy way is that I have decided to leave fear behind on such matters. Whatever happens with regards to Powerless, acceptance or rejection it can only be good. If accepted, then boom, all kinds of goodness, if rejected, then move on, leave it alone or try and fix.

So while its out there currently I have moved on. I still have a few more places in mind to send it and hopefully will get my arse in gear and to such a thing, but currently I am trying to get my head into Russia.

Russia will be, hopefully, a five part comic book story. I have a couple of places that I think will be interested so I am writing up the bits I already have committed to paper along with the bits that are floating around my head. If by some small chance an awesome illustrator who digs crazy scifi concepts an as a bit of the Brian Bolland or Mobius or David Mack about them fancies finding out what this crazy little idea I have is, then please get in touch.

So... currently writing a five page outline, then gonna try and write it as a five page 'Future Shocks' 'pilot' of sorts and then get the first chapter/issue written and then start chucking it out there.

Just need to sort out the day job now...

NO LIFE!

2013

Happy New Year!

A little late, I know, but hey, it's already been that kind of year. Plus it's only ever really worth writing something when you have something to say.

It has been pretty busy this year already. Mainly with real life rubbish like work and illness. But I have been writing.

3 things that currently occupy my brain.

POWERLESS. Yep, it's still there, it hasn't gone away and it is now on it's way the BBC's Writer's Room. It has taken many years to get it to the point where I feel it was ready to be viewed by a proper critical eye. Fingers are indeed crossed.

ANTHROPOPHAGY. Currently a short film script, but I have brain stormed it and I really think this could work as a feature. So... I am gonna break down treatment and see what I can do about getting some funding to write this mental, sick and romantic film. It's about consumption, meat, love and illness and death.

RUSSIA. I am writing a 5 part comic book. I might be illustrating it. I might have an illustrator lined up. I think I really love this idea and would buy it myself. This is currently what I am working on now Powerless is out there.

So that's the plan.

NO LIFE!

The World is my Oyster... or something along those lines...

Yep, that's your guitar from way back, Dylan.

Anyway and blimey. Lot of stuff has occured recently, mainly writing, but a lot on the work front too.

I now have a new job within the company I work for that sells books and it is very exciting to be moving on to something like this. So, yeah, cool.

Powerless.
A lot of people have read it, and I have had some really great feedback. Now I know that they always say that feedback from anyone other than an industry professional is worthless... and they may be right in some instances, but I have a lot of literary friends and lot of friends who are doing what I want to do, or are in exactly the same place as me and their opinion is awesome and completely important and valid. One of the main reasons why this is the case is because I don't get a 'yeah, man, its good, i like it...' I get some very thoughtful feedback, constructive, destructive and mind changing remarks. So since I last posted, saying I was done with Powerless... well I was, then I sent it to a bunch of good folks who read it and those thoughts and opinions made me go back and reasses and rewrite. It has been really helpful and has improved a lot of what I already liked into something better. Of course, some of the feedback I got was bollocks, but you ignore the bollocks.

Next.
Well, I have just finished writing an outline (just in case a five page outline is requested rather than script) and a series outline that kinda sets in place ideas for a potential six episode arc that would make a series (i'm thinking it would only need the one). This series outline is something the BBC wants went submitting material for a series. They have some awesome guidelines set in place for the newly structure submissions department they have recently put together. So Powerless will making a trip to the BBC. I'm not expecting much to be honest. What I hope is that they see potential in the writing. I'm not convinced its a BBC show, but in light of awesomeness like The Fades, there is totally an audience out there. Fuck knows why they cancelled such a great show. Then I shall be gunning for The Red Planet Prize again... fingers crossed, third time lucky...

Work will become a dominating force over the next few months as Christmas takes over the world. My new job is gonna be awesome and intense as I shall be in charge of ordering stock for five stores. I'm really excited to see how I can help and affect my cluster of shops and use the skills I have developed in store to help others.

Writing however will not fade completely away. I should be having weekends all to myself in terms of being away from work so I can focus on writing. Creating a body of work is important so I have a portfolio to showcase. So far I have a tv pilot spec, an award winning short film script I cowrote, a treatment for a feature and a whole bunch of ideas. So my plan is to get those ideas more solid. I wanna write another short that has been titled Pangs for quite sometime and I really wanna write a feature I have had in my head for fucking years. But I also have some other TV ideas that are desperate to get out of my head.

Titles of ideas (in a possible order of being tackled)
The World is my Oyster... based on a series of mental little adlib shorts i made with Dan at uni. I love it as an idea and think it could really work in a sitcom format.
Pangs... short
The Girl at the Centre of Creation... writing Powerless has helped me see this idea in a better light, and identify a better way of structuring it
Pulp Horror... feature
Darkness Rising/Violent Crimes... still in there, still thinking up new ways of go at this thing

So yeah. Busy.

NO LIFE!

Comics that rock my world... DANCER, Snyder's New52 stuff, Debris, The Creep, Rachel Rising, Fatale, Avengers Versus X-Men

Film... Dredd 3D is awesome, Avengers is awesome, Jaws on Blu is awesome, The Master will be awesome, Looper will be awesome...

Tellybox... Newsroom is the best thing on TV, dug Revolution, rocking season 4 of LOST again, The Prisoner being revisited and fuck me ace cartoons TRON Legacy, Thundercats, Regular Show (Ooooooohhhhhhhh!), Young Justice, Avengers...

Books... A Possible Life (New Faulks) is wonderful, The Lighthouse should win the Booker, Scarlet Thomas' book on writing should be THE book on writing, The Yellow Birds should be read by your face now, and I can't wait to read the new Warren Ellis, the new James Smythe

RESIDENT EVIL 6 is out next week! Whoop!

Chaos and Riots

Powerless is written. The first draft is complete. I have to say I feel weird about it. It's taken a long time to get to this point on this idea, from it's humble beginnings about a guy who gets abducted by aliens and bestowed superpowers, to a depressed, suicidal twenty something who can't kill himself to what it is now. It's been about six years in development and although there were times when I completed drafts of some of these ideas I was never truely happy with them. Always felt that something was missing, that something wasn't right.

This new draft, which has taken just over a year to complete, feels different.

I started writing it after I completed the short film script Ella with Dan Gitsham, which was in 2010. I wrote the first two pages, which was essentially a wishfullfillment piece... I have always wanted to take a run and jump off a building and fly. It was this idea that allowed me to move away from the despressing nature of what Powerless was always about... what if Superman was a coward. But rather than take it down that dark path of depression and woe is me, I wanted to flip it. What if I had superpowers, wanted to use them, but didn't know how or what the repocussions would be. If I had powers, I would probably be doing exactly what I am doing now, writing a blog about a script I have finished about a guy who has powers. I don't think I would use them. Fear. I think I would be scared shitless to use them, because, as is the case with me... I wouldn't know what the outcome of me using them would be. Unless I can see the whole story planned ahead, I tend to not make a move, I tend to over think and procrastinate until the moment passes. Not a coward, just a realist, a pessimist and a procrastinator.

So yeah, wrote those pages. Sometimes when I complete a project/script, especially if its an intense experience like Ella was, I wanna just drown myself in tv or film or books or computer games, but after Ella I was kinda buzzed, so got to work. But the filming of Ella happened and I got swallowed up with feature film ideas for Ella.

I didn't want to rush the script of Powerless. I wanted it to be a showcase for what I can do as a writer. I wanted to show what my interests were, what I knew and what I love. I wanted to have fun with it and allow it to flow at the right speed. Admittedly I should have finished it a few months back, but Max Payne 3 came out and work got pretty heavy. So I let it play out. Spent a lot of time rewriting the first few pages, stripping it back, over writing it, under writing, trying to get the mood and feel just right so you could feel the emotion, so you could essentially feel the insides of the shoes my main character is wearing. I also wanted to write a lot of personal shit into it. Not personal feelings exactly, although they do figure into it (of course they do), but some actual moments from history. I wanted to give it texture, make it feel real to me without it feeling dull and a bore to write. Because if I find it boring to write, then you are gonna find it boring to read. But then I seemed to get it right. It seemed to flow. At least until I stumbled over the villian. I wanted a villian.

As I have said before somewhere on this blog, that I wanted to write a comic book show. i wanted to do what Heroes failed at doing. I love comics. I read shit loads every month. I sell them everyday. Not an hour goes by that I am not in some sort of comic book conversation with someone. So, yeah, its my passion. And they say write what you know. So, yeah comics.

But every comic hero needs a villian. So I stumbled a little. Ran through cliche and stereotype, until I came to what I've got now. Hopefully not cliche or stereotypical, but recognisable.

The beautiful thing that came out of this was not knowing what to do with him as a villian. I wanted it real and I wanted it to compliment the hero. A hero who doesn't want to be one. What if you are a villian and there are no heroes? How can you be a villian? Can you be a villian?

So, this fed back into my main character and really helped give the script some meat. But it didn't have a canvas. And then I saw Aaron Sorkin's Newsroom. It's awesome. Pretty much anything he writes is awesome. And what he is doing is pretty obvious and has been done before, but something hit me. Give it some historic background, give it a canvas that fits, that matters and that had some affect on me.

The London Riots.

The script runs takes place in august of 2011. It's fucking crazy. It's fucking scary. It's fucking terrifying and feeds into the mentality of my main character perfectly.

So yeah. It's done. I feel weird about it. Mainly because I have an ending. An ending that had been mutating in my head for the last two months. I had about six of them and then one morning they all got stuck together and fucked and had a mutant baby ending that I wrote yesterday. I like it. It has something to say (at least I hope). It's grim and its real and its hopeful and it's wacky and it's definitive but wide open.

I feel weird cos its done and cos i like it. And worried because I like it and its done. I think its done. I feel its done. Its out of my head but always there, playing out. But its playing out completely now. It has a theme that runs through and I think and hope that it ends and plays out with satisfaction. I feel satisfied.

The end.

I wanna write something else now...

NO LIFE....

The Dark Knight Rises... It's been over a week since I saw this. Still not sure about it. I liked it. But didn;t love it. It's good, but not great. It's the weakest of the Nolan bat films. It's the weakest of Nolan's films. It doesn't live up to it's own promise, let alone the promise at the end of The Dark Knight. The promise at the end of Batman Begins was delivered and then some in TDK, but TDKR drops the ball. The script is a great read, the film is great fun. But... ahh shit I don't know. Gonna see it again next week and in IMAX at the end of August.

Newsroom... It's great. I love it.

The Twelve... the epic sequel to The Passage is brilliant. Bigger, darker, weirder. It's very cool.

The Age of Miracles... one of the best books you'll read this year.

Hans Zimmer... his work on TDKR is amazing. Helped the end of Powerless.

Lynch on bluray... AWESOME!

The Grey... Loved this film an awful lot.

One Man and His Dog... for a bit...

Last month Ella was nominated at the Limelight Film Awards for best horror... and it won! Very cool, very exciting, very pleased and very proud.

It's been almost two years now to the day that we filmed Ella, and having recently rewatched it after not seeing it for a while... well, I have to say it deserved to win. Although I never saw the competition... Ella is awesome. It is very awesome. I had got my mind into a horrible place where I saw faults with it, that I wasn't happy with it, but having rewatched both cuts I have sitting on a disc... it blew my mind a little.Yeah its messy and ambiguous in what we show, and yeah there are bits that didn't translate so well from the script, but fuck... the mood, atmosphere and feel of that little fucker are so strong that you just forget whatever short comings exist. Fuck, there aint any shortcomings. I showed it to someone who was a fan of it at the weekend and someone who was new to it and it just creates silence in the room when its over. Love it. Love how it makes people feel. The ambiguity of it is only there on the surface, the way it is put together and the things that are suggested kinda do the film a lot of service as it gets the head firing up and filling in the blanks. Its ace.

Dan I salute you and everyone involved with it. Ella week was an awesome week of shooting. Mr. Head is a legend in everyway and Miss Blackwell does the greatest dog barking while being covered in red shit and wearing a dogs face ever! I miss that week of shooting, I miss the scripting of that little crazy film and will never forget the phonecall when Dan suggested 'Dog Face'.

We need to work together again dude. I shall email you those words as soon as I have finished this blog. Something new. Something dark. Something fucked. Something born from the two brains we have between us. Something with blood and dirt in it. Something that says something about the human condition and how fucked we all are.

Namaste.

THINK:BREATHE:WRITE:DESTROY

Happy New Year.

Yeah. Late. Nevermind.

New year, new focus. Proper focus. Two things. Two main things.

Powerless is about half way complete and probably will take most of the year to fine tune before anything happens with it. Its not a bad thing, no point in rushing these things. If I didn't have to work then all would be different. But Powerless needs to be perfect. Its my thing, my passion and I need to get it right, i need to get it down right.

I read a blog by the writer of Death in Paradise, BBC crime drama I had no interest in watching and never actually watched. But the writer is interesting because he won the Red Planet prize, something I have entered a couple of times and gotten fairly far into the process only to be let down by a rushed finished script. Anyway, his blog about how he got started with this whole thing is very interesting. He wrote that you should write what you know. However obvious that maybe, for some reason, when I used to hear that I always thought that meant, what I knew from a day to day kind of thing. Stupid right? Well, not really. But what this writer knew was crime drama. He loved it, he was obsessed with it, read it, watched it, loved it.

So as you know I'm writing Powerless, about a guy with powers. Its a love letter to comics, its a wishfullfillment thing, its a what would i have done with powers in a certain situation. Comics, superheroes... its what I know, so i am gonna write the hell out of it.

This writer dude, also went on to say that because he loved this stuff so much, he would write something thatwas original, that no one else had ever seen, that no one else could write. Now, the whole originiallity thing... cop dramas have been done to death, but its more of a 'no one can write this thing quite like me'.

So, there has been Heroes, and various other cack tv shows about superheroes, but no one has ever written Powerless. Not the way I am writing it. It's mine. And that is why its original.

Lets just hope its good.

Aside from Powerless I have been developing something that started off as a short film, but I think would really extend itself into an ace little character study feature. Its got the working title of Pangs at the moment and is a romance about a guy with an eating disorder and how love can transcend anything when its true.

NO LIFE!

Homeland is fucking awesome. Best new show on the box.

Luck is a little odd at the moment, finding it a little tough to get into. But liking it all the same. Well, i want to like it.

Alcatraz has started promisingly.

Walking Dead season 2 part two continues and I hope it continues to be good.

Sons of Anarchy season 4 is fecking brilliant.

Drive is one of the best films I have seen in ages and has become one of my all time faves. A little obsessed with it...

Whispers by Joshua Luna is brilliant.

Rachel Rising by Terry Moore keeps on getting more awesome with each new issue.

Scott Snyder is a God, as is Grant Morrison and Warren Ellis. Batman, Action Comics and Captain Swing are currently rocking my comic book reading world a lot.

TMNT are back and rule!

Mono and And So I Watch You From Afar and Feist fill my ears with brilliance.

Namaste...
